THE CARTOON MUSEUM
CATS IN CARTOONS

As Lead Graphic Designer, I created all digital and print media for Cats in Cartoons, the latest exhibition at The Cartoon Museum.

The exhibition celebrates many of the greatest cats to grace comics, newspapers and magazines, and explore why people love cats so much and what cats tell us about life.

The Museum worked alongide the Battersea Cats and Dogs Home, our main sponsor, to develop an educational component that highlighted the real-world lives of cats beyond the comic.

Here is a glimpse of my work on this project:

BRAND GUIDELINES:

LOGO DESIGN:

I created a vibrant new logo for the exhibition, blending the textures and characteristics of cats with playful, cartoon-inspired typography to craft an engaging yet clean design. My work below showcases the full creative process — from sketching initial concepts by hand, to experimenting with various styles and iterations, in total 8 concept designs, before the team collaboratively refined and selected the final logo to be used on the front cover of the exhibition.

POSTER:

The poster underwent multiple drafts as we explored different background images and refined the layout of key exhibition details, such as dates, sponsorships, and venue information. Ultimately, the team decided to feature two front covers for the exhibition, showcasing standout works by artists Ronald Searle and Anthony Smith. This approach not only celebrated their contributions but also highlighted key important infomation about the exhibit.

INFOGRAPHIC LABELS:

Using the brand guidelines I created above, I designed all text labels on Adobe InDesign (A3, A5 and A6), following the same consistent word format and bleed dimensions for printing. In total, I designed 70 labels according to precise specifications, consistently adhering to the layout and typography guidelines established in the brand documents. Each label included bleeds, crop marks, and footers, ensuring they were fully prepared for printing and mounting.

CUTOUT and WALL VINYLS

I designed a large-scale cardboard cutout graphic, cat silhouette installations, and colored cat paw vinyls for the exhibition. The goal was to add humorous, engaging elements throughout the space that would appeal to visitors, particularly young children and families. I transformed Anthony Smith’s original comic into a digital illustration using Adobe Illustrator, added colors inspired by the Judge Dredd character that influenced the piece, and prepared the final artwork with bleed marks for production. In addition, I hand-drew all the cat paws and silhouettes from scratch, using playful cat poses sourced from reference images to create lively, characterful silohuettes.
