HEADLOCKED
GRADUATE ANIMATED SHORT FILM 2023
LEAD LAYOUT ARTIST

In my final year of BA Animation Production, I worked alongside 8 students to produce a 2D animated short film, Headlocked. The film was screened at 2023 BFI film festival.

As Lead Layout Artist and Assistant Producer, I was responsible for researching and designing background layouts as well as creating Excel timetables and spreadsheets.

Headlocked tells the story about a young typewriter, David who cannot escape the parasite growing in his room.

My work below shows my process from researching ideas, to developing concepts and producing final 2D digital backgrounds on Adobe Photoshop.

FINAL LAYOUTS:

1ST STAGE: FLOOR PLAN

2ND STAGE: COLOUR SCHEME

3RD STAGE: 2D WALL LAYOUTS

4TH STAGE: FINDING A FINAL LAYOUT STYLE

In total, I went though 3 design experiment stages. In each stage I conducted research and developoed concepts, each time documenting and presenting my findings:

5TH STAGE:  THE FINAL SHOTS

When the team moved onto the production stage of the film, it was time to create the final shots. Below I have shown the process I went through to design a shot; from thumbnail sketches to tonal sketches, first pencil sketch draft, first outline digital draft, first painted digital draft and final layout.
